Menopause: Evidence-based answers to your questionsThis video presents independent, detailed, modern information on the menopause. In particular it looks at the scientific research and medical evidence for the safety, risks and benefits of the main therapeutic options around and after the menopause. The programme is intended to be an adjunct to both personal counselling by a medical practitioner and to written information. The video explains the possible effects of the menopause, answers commonly asked questions, and gives options at the menopause in regards to life-style and therapies. In particular, the viewer is empowered to understand levels of scientific evidence for pharmaceutical and alternative therapies so that you can better judge the benefits and risks of therapeutic options that may be available from a variety of sources. The risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy are discussed including information released in 2002 about the United States Women’s Health Initiative study. The video is set at a restaurant where the topic of conversation is menopause. The women who are at different stages of menopause ask questions to three experts on the menopause. The answers to the questions are based on the best available scientific evidence currently available in the scientific literature as of October 2002 and are the independent opinions of the authors. This video has been independently written and produced by Professor Alastair MacLennan from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The University of Adelaide, South Australia.
