NHMRC booklet for health professionals The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has released a booklet providing information and advice to health professionals about the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by peri- and post-menopausal women. Following the report of the Women's Health Initiative the booklet is under review. The booklet for health professionals reviews the spectrum of available evidence on the indications for, and the possible risks and benefits of, HRT. In reviewing the evidence, the booklet concludes that, for most women, the overall health benefits of HRT use, particularly in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, in general far outweigh the possible risks, such as a possible small increase in the risk of breast cancer. The booklet also makes recommendations about - which tests to carry out when considering/prescribing HRT; the types and regimes of HRT available; the monitoring and cessation of treatment; and general advice women should be given regarding healthy lifestyle To Order Publications: National Mailing and Marketing |
