Yoga and insomnia

Yoga may help reduce insomnia and menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women with insomnia, the first randomized clinical trial evaluating the exercises in this group has found.

Researchers studied 44 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 65 years old who were not undergoing hormone therapy and had an apnea-hypopnea index less than 15 and a diagnosis of insomnia.

They were randomized to four months of control, passive stretching or yoga groups.

Compared with the control group, the yoga group had higher scores for quality of life post-treatment and significantly lower scores for climacteric symptoms and insomnia severity. The reduction in insomnia severity was significantly higher than in control and passive-stretching groups.
