Tribute to Dr Alice MacLennan

Thursday 10, Sep 2015

Dr Alice MacLennanBorn in Scotland and educated in Scotland, England and France, Alice studied medicine at The University of Glasgow where she met her future husband Alastair. After time spent in Chicago and Oxford, Alice and Alastair moved to Adelaide, South Australia where Alastair had accepted an academic post. Their tenure was for 3 years; however, they never left.

Alice commenced her professional life in a group general practice but her interest in women's health increased over time, leading her to establish her own menopause clinic, as well as being an inaugural member of Adelaide University's Hormone and Menopause Centre. Alice was an investigator in many research trials, gave regularly of her time to provide education to women in the community, and spoke regularly at national and international conferences.

Together with her husband, Alastair, the Inaugural Joint Editor of Climacteric, she recorded video summaries of eight International Menopause Society Congresses and a number of patient education videos in several languages. For 20 years, they also produced an annually updated booklet entitled 'Presenting a positive outlook on the menopause'.

Alice was a lifelong member of the IMS and a Foundation member of The Australian (later Australasian) Menopause Society. She served on the AMS Board for many years, including a term as Secretary from 2001 to 2005 and President from 2007 to 2009. She was awarded, with Alastair, that society's peak honour, the Lifetime Achievement Award, in 1998 and, following her term as President, was made a Life member of the AMS.

Alice was active in many other medical organizations including Osteoporosis Australia, The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and The South Australian Doctors' Health Advisory Service, and in 2012 The Government of Australia awarded her The Order of Australia Medal for services to women's reproductive health and professional organizations.

A doctor by profession, Alice was above all a compassionate and caring human being who did much to promote the well-being of women in Australia and elsewhere in the world. She is remembered by those who knew her as someone with great grace and dignity, a role model and leader to those around her and also possessed of a great sense of fun.

To her husband Alastair, her daughters Lorna and Suzanna and her grandchildren we offer our sincere sympathy at this difficult time.
