The Australasian Menopause Society (AMS) has welcomed the launch of the Federal Government’s National Menopause and Perimenopause Awareness Campaign, describing it as a significant step forward in improving women’s health information and support across Australia.
AMS President Christina Jang said the campaign responds directly to the experiences shared by women through the 2024 Senate Inquiry into menopause and perimenopause.
“The Senate Inquiry highlighted that many women felt uninformed and unprepared as they transitioned through perimenopause and menopause,” Dr Jang said.
“This is an important national initiative, and we congratulate the Federal Government for their leadership in developing this awareness campaign.”
Dr Jang said it was critical that Australian women have access to independent, evidence-based information to support informed healthcare decisions during midlife.
“Women deserve access to the very best evidence available to help guide the choices they make about their health and wellbeing,” she said.
“The AMS is proud to have contributed to the development of this campaign, and it is particularly pleasing to see AMS evidence-based resources and educational materials being utilised.”
Dr Jang attended the campaign launch, hosted by the Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon Rebecca White MP, and the Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Mark Butler MP. The launch brought together key stakeholders, health professionals and advocates at Parliament House to recognise the significance of the initiative and its impact on women’s health and wellbeing.
Dr Jang said the AMS remained committed to supporting both women and healthcare practitioners to better understand healthcare needs during midlife.
“We will continue to work to ensure women and healthcare professionals have access to trusted, evidence-based information and resources on menopause and perimenopause,” she said.
The Australasian Menopause Society is a clinician-led society that exists to advance the care of women in midlife through clinical education, research, evidence translation and the provision of trusted information for health professionals and the public.
