Abstracts

Menopause consultation: A structured approach to investigation and treatment
Dr Carmel Reynolds

A menopause consult provides an opportunity to identify symptoms, contraceptive needs, and discuss treatment options. It also comes at a stage of life where it is timely to identify and treat risk factors for chronic disease, review cancer screening and assist in helping women find ways to participate in health promoting behaviours. This presentation aims to provide a framework for approaching these consults to meet the needs of the person presenting with symptoms and provide adequate time for addressing all health concerns in a patient centred way.

Prescribing MHT: Evidence base and common questions answered
Professor Rod Baber AM

This presentation will define the stages of the menopause transition and will discuss the evidence base for the use of menopausal hormone therapy including contraindications and how to minimize any side effects and potential risks. Simple guidance on methods of prescription will be provided.

Cases will be presented including a perimenopausal woman, a migraine sufferer, a woman who experiences postmenopausal bleeding, an older woman wishing to continue her MHT and a young woman with premature ovarian insufficiency.

Investigating and managing unscheduled bleeding with MHT
Dr Yasmin Tan

MHT is undoubtedly a highly effective treatment of perimenopausal/menopausal symptoms. It also has beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and skeletal systems.  Irregular bleeding is not uncommon when taking MHT. It may affect compliance with treatment and in some cases indicate underlying pathology.

Timely investigation is important to ensure detection and appropriate treatment. Some adjustment to MHT may be required to ensure ongoing treatment and preservation of quality of life.

Update on non-hormonal treatment options in menopause
Dr Terri Foran

Menopausal hormone therapy remains the ‘gold-standard’ against which all other menopausal therapy is compared. But there are women with significant menopausal symptoms who cannot, or don’t wish to, use hormone therapy. It is important that clinicians are able to discuss the available evidence-based alternatives with such women. This presentation will discuss the risks and benefits of the range of non-hormonal menopausal therapies currently available.  It will also attempt to compare the likely symptom improvement between those therapies in an attempt to assist clinicians to provide accurate advice to their menopausal patients who may be considering non-hormonal therapy for their symptoms.

Management of genitourinary syndrome of menopause
Dr Terri Foran

This Presentation will cover the Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause -GUM (previously called Vulvovaginal atrophy) which affects the majority of postmenopausal women not on menopausal hormone therapy but is often underrecognised and undertreated.  This presentation will review the common signs and symptom of this condition as well as the range of evidence-based therapy now available to treat it- including pharmacological therapies new to the Australian market. There will an emphasis on explaining the risks and benefits of such therapy to a woman considering their use and inclusion of a few practical tips which are likely to enhance their effectiveness.

Investigating and managing pelvic floor dysfunction and incontinence
Dr Zhuoran Chen

This presentation will cover the investigation and management of pelvic floor dysfunction in the postmenopausal women, including pelvic organ prolapse, stress and urge urinary incontinence. Simple guidance with tips and tricks of assessment and management will be discussed. Cases involving postmenopausal women with prolapse and incontinence will be discussed throughout the presentation, from simple to more complex cohorts with medical co-morbidities
